The brand anchor · The 1% Shift

When you can't do anything, do this 1% shift.

Some days the whole list is too big. Shower. Walk. Eat. Text back. This is the technique for those days. One tiny mechanical shift is a complete intervention — not a consolation prize. It's how a frozen nervous system thaws.

The technique

Three micro-moves. All in place.

The 1% Shift

  1. Feet flat on the floor (or mattress). If you're lying down, press heels into the bed. Just make contact. That's it.
  2. One long exhale. In through the nose, out through pursed lips. Twice as long as the inhale. Once.
  3. Name one thing you can see.Anywhere. A crack in the ceiling. A shadow. Your hand. Out loud or in your head.

That's the whole thing. You did something today.

Why this is enough

Freeze thaws from the body upward — not the head downward.

On bad days, "just go for a walk" or "try to get sunlight" fails because it starts from your cognition. When you're in freeze, your thinking brain is offline. Telling it to make decisions adds shame.

The 1% Shift bypasses thinking with three body-based signals: pressure (feet making contact = you're supported), breath (long exhale = parasympathetic activation), orienting (naming one visible thing = first step out of dissociation).

Those three signals move you up one notch. Maybe today, that's all you do. That's a real intervention. Come back tomorrow.

"I have chronic depression, anxiety and stress... chest pain tightness nausea for two years now."
For people in long-term dysregulation, the 1% Shift is the technique that doesn't ask you to be anywhere other than where you are. No motivation required. No willpower required. Three movements you can do under a blanket.
The full system

The 1% Shift is six of eight.
